Is it still under guarantee?  It sound to me to be faulty.  If an external
modem flakes out on a hot day I would suggest that it is not of
merchantable quality and so the retailer is obliged to replace it.  This
is not dependent on the guarentee, but is covered by the "what-ever-it-is"
act.
