Hi, A while back I put this question to my linux-savvy friends. Whilst one or maybe two said "Gnome" they didn't really care, and the rest said "KDE". Of those who said KDE, quite a few put exclamation marks afterwards.
So, here I am with Debian 3.0 woody, with the 2.4 kernel and KDE 2.2.2. It's all good. In addition (no, don't try and stop me), you can switch between the two, or any number of other window managers! How about that! I played around with a couple, but I just like KDE and all the neat KDE integration and tasteful apps. The Gnome stuff looks a bit garish.
