I use what my wholesaler has.

I have had problems with HP and Philips, the lubrication failed. However,
I have since improved the cooling. Say 500 each. I don't trust these.

I got ~1000 from an Iomega. A Creative was down-graded to a cdrom drive
because I needed a drive at about 600. I have a Samsung 40x at the moment
which has done 600 and going well. I have a similar drive in Invercargill
which has done about the same number and still going well.

If I get a couple of complaints from customers about reading problems I
advise them to clean their drives which almost always solves the problem.
However, at this point I replace the writer. For most people the burner
would still be useful for another 1000, but in my case it has to be A+++.
I do my costings on the basis of 1000 burns for a reasonable quality
domestic writer. Not all that helpful as I take into account the initial
wholesale price.
