Well, I could burn at at 48x too, it would prob just take 10 times as long as burning on 16x. But I did say I had old hardware, with a flash box it might be ok. I still prefer to spend a minute longer burning than watch the burn progress indicator. Have you ever checked just how many buffer underruns your burnproof/whatever actually prevents? There's a chance that a disk burnt with a recovery from buffer underruns isn't as good quality, which is what I read to be true for DVD.
