Hi-ho,

I've got an HP3820, which is well supported under Linux, although only
up to 1200x1200DPI, which means for best quality I need to use that
other operating system.

BTW, 4800x1200 makes a noticeable difference to half tones and subtle
shading on the top quality photo papers, but anything above 600x600
seems to be wasted on normal 80gsm paper.

I've mucked around with custom PPD files for gimp-print from
linuxprinting.org but not got very far, I googled a page that suggested
that would get my 4800x1200 working..

For general printing in draft mode it is reasonably economic, but if
you're into full coverage photo printing I think it's probably on a par
with the running cost of the Epson units. Draft mode is quite good
quality in reality, very acceptable for general documents, letters,
screen dumps etc.

Running costs are around $0.05 a page in draft, and $1.00(+$2.00 for
decent paper) per page for photo quality. I run an old laser for by
general printing, at about $0.02 a page.

If you get a HP Deskjet anything update to the latest version of the
hpijs from sourceforge. Most of the distros seem to be a version
behind, and 1.4.1 seems to be much faster than 1.3.x on large (full page
1200x1200) images, and gives better photo results from gimp etc.

My 2c worth...
