Frequently it's not so much the quality of the CDs per se, but the fact that 
Linux is often installed onto hand-me-down computers, which frequently have 
less than up to the minute CDROM drives. Older drives very frequently won't 
read writeable CDs properly. A throiugh clean of the lens sometimes helps, 
but not always.
