I'd suggest sticking with Mandrake. But if you head along to the installfest someone
should be able to help you set it up while waiting for Gentoo to compile! Anybody?
Jason are you going your'd probably be able to help?
By the way which of the commands did you try that stuffed up? 
Can you try from the command line.
cd /proc/
dir
If it lists stuff see if you can do 
cat pci | less
that will list all the add on cards in your system should be able to tell 
you what the Graphics card is. (press q to close it).
Also try
cd /etc/X11/
dir
if it lists some stuff.

One thing that would really help could you try the command
startx or startkde
and send us the error messages that it prints out on the screen?

Copies of Copies could be the problem though if you managed to install with out errors 
it
seems unlikely to be the problem.
More likely from the sounds the X (Graphical) Sever configuration
was not done or Stuffed up.

How many CD's did you have by the way?
