One of the nice features of Gentoo is that it's possible to generate binary packs for identical-ish machines, so we will use that regime as much as possible.

But it's crapped out on this particular machine, for reasons we know not, and we have to either find out why and fix it, or reinstall, or quite possibly both. Sure replacing the XFree86 and tweaking that with vi is a piece of cake, but I suspect there's a bit more to it than that. My suspicion is that the install disks are faulty and only an uknown fraction of Linux has been loaded. otoh, computers are compicated beasts which do go faulty from time to time and it's well known that Linux stresses them more than MS Win. Of course somebody will have the time to have a look at Rowan Trau'e's computer. > And > recompiling Gentoo for the Machine would take ALOT longer than fixing a > Config file even with all those Machines. Agreed Gentoo needs that certain level of competence to install and configure, but after that's been done by somebody who has that level of competence, using it and keeping it up to date is an absolute doddle. If somebody is incapable of keying "emerge package" or "emerge --update world" then imho they are incapable of using a computer irrespective of how many gui whatsits you flash up for them. > By the way what times it on?
