David Merriman is on permanent record as saying: :Hi there, :I've just installed Mandrake 9.1 (complete linux newbie), and everything :appears to be working now, except I can't play any music CD's. I've got :a SoundBlaster Live! card, and Midiland 4.1 speakers. I (finally) found :out how to get MP3's to play via Xmms, and fiddling with the volume :settings in AuMix, but I can't hear anything when I play music CD's. :It's not critical, as I don't actually do this very often anyway, but it :would be nice to know how for next time.
I'm not sure if drake uses alsa or not by default. However, if alsa is controlling your audio, the CD level may be muted. Double check your mixer (or have a quick test with alsamixer in a terminal. If it is muted, you'll see 'MM' at the top of the fader.) If alsa isn't being used, cd audio is still controlled by another mixer control. Make sure that your fiddling with volume settings includes a cd audio fader. The other thing that might be happening is that you don't have the audio cable running from the cdrom to the sound card. This is a non-issue if you know that playing from cds works in other OSs. Interestingly, xmms just added support for digital audio extraction, which means that the audio cable will no longer be necessary. Alsaplayer does this by default, and could be used as another test, if you wish. Good luck. Greg --- -
