Thanks Greg, that was the answer. AlsaMixer had the CD level muted, and at volume 0. As soon as I un-muted and upped the volume, voila ! I had sound. What's annoying is that I'd tried upping the volume in AuMix, but there was no indication (that I could see) that the signal was actually muted, apart from the 'Mute All' menu item which I'd tried toggling - how are you supposed to tell ? Dumb...

Thanks also to Nick and Chris for your suggestions. I already knew it worked in XP, so I just needed to figure out Mandrake's version of 'reality' :D

BTW Chris, I'd seen some posts by a 'Chris Wilkinson' in my digging through the CLUG archives, and I wondered if it was you. Then I saw a reference to 'Povray' and I though 'ah HA', that's the Chris I know ! You'll have to tell me what you're doing these days (off-forum if you wish); it's been a while.

Thanks again,
David

I'm not sure if drake uses alsa or not by default. However, if alsa is
controlling your audio, the CD level may be muted. Double check your
mixer (or have a quick test with alsamixer in a terminal. If it is
muted, you'll see 'MM' at the top of the fader.)

Good luck.
