Use aumix (or alsamixer from command line) to turn up the volume for the CD mixer control. And check it's not muted. You'll need to use CDplayer or Kcd to play the CD's more than likely as xmms has always caused problems for me trying to play cd's. (Mandrake does use alsa by default though you might want to check which driver the sound cards using Mandrake control center > Hardware > Harddrake > sound).
