Hey!
I am also running Mandrake 9.1 and also have this problem. Unfortunately, none 
of the above solutions helps :-(
Apart from maybe the sound card/motherboard one - if it works in Win XP should 
it work in Mandrake? (will I have to bust out the screwdriver?)
Everything is definitely working apart from that (DVDs play with sound and 
mp3s too) and alsa is definitely running and the cd is definitely not muted 
or on zero volume (and the cd slider on AuMix was the first thing I 
tried...).
Any more suggestions?
