When it comes to critical backup... there are more factors to think about that just how long will it last. CD-R's for example may last 100years, but they are also very prone to being scratched, damaged etc. Other backup mediums such as mo, tape etc, are prone to magnetic interference causing data failure.
The other thing woth thinking about is how easy is it to restore the data, and alos is that data secure... keep it free from prying eyes. Where do you plan on keeping the data? No good in the drawer beside the computer you are backing up!! Fire will get both. What about regular backups? Are they being done at the same time, have you verifed the backups, are you keeping more than one backup (history). The medium is just one very small issue as far as reliable backups go.
