Ok, I commented out this line in my '/etc/modules.' file (which I'd added to stop RoseGardenSequencer crashing):

snd-seq

and Artsd re-enabled itself when I rebooted, giving back the system sounds. However, I'm back to the RoseGardenSequencer crashing on startup:

***
[EMAIL PROTECTED] david]$ rosegardensequencer
MappedAudioPluginManager::discoverPlugins - discovering plugins
Rosegarden AlsaDriver - alsa-lib version 0.9.0rc6
ALSA lib seq_hw.c:446:(snd_seq_hw_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed: No such file or directory
AlsaDriver::generateInstruments() - couldn't open sequencer - No such file or directory
cannot connect to jack server
cannot connect to default JACK server
AlsaDriver::initialiseAudio - JACK server not running
rosegardensequencer: seq.c:875: snd_seq_query_next_client: Assertion `seq && info' failed.
***

Nick, I tried your suggestion, and here's the result:

***
[EMAIL PROTECTED] david]$ artsdsp rosegarden
AudioPluginManager::fetchSampleRate - couldn't fetch sample rate
RosegardenGUIDoc::xmlParse (reader.parse()): 10ms elapsed
AudioFileManager::generatePreviews - for 0 files
RosegardenGUI - MIDI and Audio subsystems have failed to initialise

Artsd already is disabled (probably explaining why I don't have any system sounds any more). I tried to re-enable it, but got this error message:

***
Sound server informational message:

Error while initializing the sound driver:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Oops, I spoke too soon :-( . RoseGarden appeared to be working, but I
couldn't get any sound out of it.

Hiya David, try disabling artsd from KDE Control Centre (under Sound system)

Artsd prevent most of my games from having sound by blocking access to
/dev/dsp and other sound related devices. I'm pretty sure thats what will
be happening to Rosegarden...

On the downside it means nice system sounds will be silent... :-(

Kind regards,

Chris Wilkinson,
Christchurch.
