imho, what's needed is a combination of [GK]noppix to boot it, show it off, 
and install the basic -- however you define that -- system, and something 
Gentoo-like to maintain it. Before ppl. go beserk displaying their ignorance 
about Gentoo, it can and does use binary packages if desired.
Of course the probelm for Linux and all the *BSDs is the difficulty of 
persuading the modem, nic, video, scanner, etc. manufacturers to release 
their drivers Freely. Until that's solved I suspect that it will always 
require a much higher level of expertise to install Open and Free Software 
than the likes of Ecks-Pee on to, for example, a late-model laptop with a PC 
card interface to some electronic doo-dad or other.
