Hi again

Turns out the problem was probably just a lack of memory. The machine was upgraded to a Pentium 200mmx (64MB) and the install and updates went with no problem.
The old 16MB 486 tested ok with memtest so no problems there. Its now been relegated to storage for a future project

Thanks again

Roger

Thanks for the info and suggestions - both on and off list. Seems like the problem may be a shortage of memory. I am going to put this project on hold for a day or two until I aquire either memory or a better machine. I'll let you know how it goes....(I have a machine in mind at the moment)

To recap - Dialup modem on Com1 for Internet connect and a single nic to connect to local network. The box worked as advertised up to and including Fixes2. Following the install of Fixes3, the local network (eth0) stopped completely although indicating that it was ok. A complete reinstall did the same thing.

MD5 sums were correct for all files.
