Aaah, replying to myself. Bad form, but have a status update.

Everything is now working with 2.6.0-test8. I had to add a kernel
parameter acpi=force because I have an old BIOS (on a 2 year old
laptop).

One thing I've discovered over the years of kernel compiling that I feel
I must share is that you must make sure that ALL USB and PCMCIA modules
are selected as modules, and not compiled into the kernel. So many
hotplug scripts rely on things being modules that many segfaults happen
when the drivers are not modules (I've even had kernel oops's as a
result of compiling in USB modules under 2.6).
