Fair enough - but there would still be need for regular authentication,
because a shifter is probably something other people can make.  The
biggest advantage I see is that other local wireless nets would be
uneffected by the UoC net.  I'm not an eleccy - but the disadvantage of
the shifter is that it's another bit of kit to break.
