My first method of attack is to fire up Knoppix and see what that
installs. It's not very good at getting the video card right on laptops,
but don't waste time farting around with the video driver - just boot
into text mode (it's in the Help screen). Can you find the network
drivers from there?

For the deluxe version, install Xandros but that costs $$$.
