There are two drivers available: 8139too and 8139cp. The 8139cp driver is designed to support RTL-8139C (note the 'C') chipsets and up only. The 8139too driver supports older RTL-8139{,A,B) chipsets.
If you're sure your NIC has an RTL-8139C chipset, use the 8139cp driver--it is significantly better.
On the drivers disk that came with the card it told me to compile rtl8139.c , which produced rtl8139.o
Apparently lsmod says rtl8139 is loaded already.
Confused? I am.
