as previously mentioned #1 rescue technique Knoppix .. assuming you still have a working hard disk :)
BTW interesting Live windows CD has been developed now .. it is actually quite useful, esp in cases such as this. I have Knoppix 3.4-C't and 3.3 2003-02-16 (has kde 3.1.15) available .. still waiting on the real 3.4 version.
