I've read through the other answers to this post, and no-one made the most important observation: No Desktop OS should be directly connected to the Internet. Firewalls like IPCop or Smoothwall can run on very modest hardware (486, maybe 386). Sure it helps to close the ports on your desktop OS too if you can, but firewall them too. By a firewall, I mean a separate box, not ZoneAlarm or the Mandrake equivalent running on your workstation. Yuri
