The mesa package will contain all you need to get OpenGL functionality. You may not get hardware assisted 3D, but at least software that calls OpenGL will work...

No problemo! Mesa will get you started, but also install mesa-demos to test for the presence of OpenGL. Which graphics card is your machine running? If you use a Matrox, ATI, nVidia, or one of a few other brands of card XFree86 may be able to accelerate your 3D graphics...
