I'm not laughing - it sounds oh so familiar to me At home I run XP - Mepis dual boot on the "Kitchen-box" PII333 256mb ram. I use Linux a fair bit on it - but my wife does not like it either - actually doesn't really like PC's, just wants to be able to use it - especially not keen on how much I "like" them! Provides internet access to all other machines (via XP - I know yucky - but see below).
Garage-box acts as a server and second PC - running Knoppix at the moment (change to Mepis soon)- also a PII333 with just 98mb ram. Also run a couple of low power laptops on the network mostly for MSN but also handy for e-mail, word processing etc. Sadly - not running Linux on these (yet). Must try that diskless arrangement you've all been discussing. Also want to try setting up an Ipcop box - but risk of fireworks from those who live at home (all 6 of them female) is putting me off. Whatever system I have in place has to "work" even for the unskilled users - and especially when I am not there. ciao Lance -----Original Message----- From: Steve Bell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wed, 25 Feb 2004 16:50:18 +1300 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: What do you use Linux for? I use Linux a little more occasionally than most of you. At work: Celeron 500 running 98SE. At home: PII-350, 320MB RAM (don't laugh!) Dual boot XP and Lycoris (very soon to be MDK10 RC1) My wife doesn't like linux, or it'd get used more at home. She especially doesn't like "that horrible clock" (KDE's standard), but even when I change it it still sucks. Even skinned to look like XP, it's still ugly. Fair enough. My big holdbacks at work are Photoshop and Freehand. PS looks to be running(ish) under the latest WINE, but FH is still not quite there. Oh, and that it's a pain in the ass to Multihead with XFree (I'm a Commandlineophobic). But here's my favourite use for Linux presently. I use Linux mostly to rescue crashed PC's. I've brought back several notebooks, (and a few of them were really quite shot) using Tom's RootBoot, and Knoppix.
