Thanks, all. I'll take a look at some of your suggestions, and get back
to you with more info.
It is the dreaded winmodem. The laptop uses a SiS630/730 chipset, so I
downloaded the driver from, um, somewhere, can't remember where just
now. I'll find that out, too. I know that this whole exercise may be
doomed, but it's worth a bit of debugging before spending hard-earned
$$$ down at Dick Smith on an external USB or PCMCIA modem. Also, as a
matter of principle, I want to see whether it can be done, and to post
my findings on linux-for-laptops (if I succeed).
