most likely your aussie isp won't let you collect mail from their server 
unless you are on their network. Many ISP's do that.

depends on the modem/modem router you are using. osme work as a pppoa-pppoe 
bridge. some work as a pppoe-pptp biridge. some act as a straight 
modem/router combo and simply present a private network NAT'd ethernet 
connection to the user.
