Everyone says how versatile and infinitely flexible Lego is. I only know it pretty much as it was 20 years ago, and I never had much (if any) of it. There may be some new things now, but I don't expect the basic system to have changed. When it comes to the number of possibilities to teach basic technical (mechanical) knowledge, fischertechnik http://www.fischertechnik.de/ beats Lego absolutely hands down! Fischertechnik can be connected on all 6 sides, Lego only on 2. There are some examples on http://www.fischertechnik.de/fanclub/umfrage/default.asp (be amused by the age of the maker of the Eiffel tower...). The hamster wheel http://www.fischertechnik.de/fanclub/umfrage/modelle/0404/mariokevinfeil.jpg shows many of the basic construction elements (the animals are not part of fischertechnik AFAIK). The CD burning robot http://www.fischertechnik.de/fanclub/umfrage/modelle/0404/brennhilfe.jpg would sure come in handy if you wanted to back up your 200GB hard disk... And no, because of an absence of my own replacement I've never investigated where to buy it in NZ.
