Have you tried playing DVDs and burning CDs? If yes, did you have to fiddle to get it working, or was it okay out of the box?

No to both, sorry. I would be surprised if DVD playing worked out of the
box, as DVDs are encrypted and RedHat/Fedora seems to frown on
distributing the deCSS library. I *think* the totem movie player is
installed, so playing unencrypted DVDs may work. I will try it out
tonight.

As for CD burning, it has worked out of the box with all other versions
of RedHat that I used, so if it did not work out of the I would be
surprised and disappointed. I have not burnt anything yet as I have
nothing to burn :)

I'm tempted to flag Fedora Core 2 for the installfest based on the reviews that I'm seeing. They specifically state that issues with FC2 mean that it isn't for Joe Public first time user.

I don't doubt your opinion. but do you have some urls for us to read the
reviews too?

Sure thing.

On one hand, it is a great introduction to Linux. It installs easily, works well and is attractive. On the other hand, it plays right into the hands of Linux's biggest critics, which is the mistaken notion that it is unfinished and most things don't work. You are given a browser with no plugins, so if you jump online excitedly with your new system, there are a lot of things that won't work. You load your favorite mp3s, then find out you cannot play them. God forbid you have a dvd drive. You notice the red exclamation point telling you there are updates available, but up2date freezes leaving you unable to get them. I know there are fairly simple solutions to these complaints, but the fact remains that not everyone who tries Fedora will know how to do it. They will just feel disappointed by a system that lets them down, deciding that this *Linux thing* is not ready for prime time.

FC2 suffers from some fatal flaws. For most people, it will be best to put this malformed whelp out of its misery and wait for the Fedora Project's next litter of pups, which promises some awesome powers.
. . .
In this release the Fedora Project has given us more to tinker with than usual (read: lots of stuff doesn't work). If you need a distribution that "just works" out of the box, FC2 is not for you. For everyone else, there is a growing list of third-party repositories to explore. A list of them can be found in this Slashdot post <http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=108021&cid=9185134>. You also won't find your skills with the make utility getting rusty anytime soon.

But then there are pages such as
*_Fedora Core 2 Guide for Novices

which looks to be a hell of a lot of work to get the install into a workable os.

According to my judgement, I wouldn't want to put this on to a newbies machine. Sure, I'll look at it and play with it myself, but it's not for a first comer.
