YaST seems very fussy about working on more than one task at a time. I've seen it hang when too busy too. Sounds like you've broken it.

Yes. Find someone who has downloaded them already, & ask if they can be burnt to disk for you.
Have you looked up WellyLUG yet? A LUG closer to home? Do they respond to you?
