Correct. THe basic command is rpm -UvhF
My update disks have a script with functions without yast, as a
backstop. The disks also work as update source with yast.

Probably not. Dpeendencies are not typically a problem with SuSE. You
would need to update some groups of packages with the same invocation of
rpm, no problem if you use wildcards on the command line.
