The sense I had intended to convey was this - How can such a talented group of people have the time to want to edit GNU out of Linux history? i.e. defensive disbelief under pressure of manifold vociferous reaction, from perception of a place for GNU in Linux's future (unless replaced by Perl, of course - viz today's lesson on sed).

Hey! That was a python script! Python! Not that other language! Yeeurrgh.

I really am going to have to concentrate harder here :-)

Besides, nobody wants to edit out GNU from Linux history, nor can they. People simply do not want to say "GNU/Linux". That's all. That's the only gripe with GNU. Even *you* don't want to say GNU/Linux! Look at the quoted paragraph from you; no GNU/Linux combo there.

Yes, I want to say it alright - to shout it from the rooftops: "FREE Software"* (tone moderated out of netiquette). But I'm not willing to aggravate anyone with it. What is clear to me is that Linux is shorthand for GNU/Linux, and in most cases the shorthand usage is fine. It is in retaining certain wider freedoms that GNU/Linux is invaluable - the philosophy that set Linux free (detail I can supply later, re M$CO line).

* Your other meanings could be Free as in time, & Free as in liberty - what we need Free-as-in-speech to defend (whereas Free-as-in-beer usually has a catch, eg buy 11 get 1 'free', pay through hangover & social problems later, ...) - free to charge for quality software services.

Oops. Sorry. Started this thread off again. It was the Python/Perl thing that got me going.... :-)

No harm in that - we've got to get the facts straight. And it's your thread, after all :-)

Cheers,
Carl.
