Well the 5th CD suggests your using one of the professional or better versions of SUSE so it's hardly fair to compare it to the Download version of Mandrake (though feel free to compare MDK's Download version with the SUSE FTP install)! Seeing the Discovery version of Mandrake (and the more expensive powerpack and powerpack+ versions) include the Software modem drivers, Nvidia drivers, ATI drivers, Java, Java plugin for web browsers, Flash plugin, Wifi drivers, the Crossover plugin etc. Compare like with like and Free version is not the like of the Pro version! Look at these tables listing the features of the various versions Mandrake sells! http://www.mandrakesoft.com/products/10/comparison And then if you can be bothered look at the file lists and you'll find the drivers your looking for. If the Clug decideds to use the Download edition for installs then it's expected that it's not going to work as well as the full versions. > > I don't mean to bitch and whine, but the small amount of Mandrake i saw > yesterday was hopeless. It should be right there as a menu option, Did you read the Doc provided to the installers? It was explained there as well as in the CLUG wiki. Also the urpmi sources weren't supposed to be added untill all the packages needed or wanted had been added. > like on YaST, so you can unselect a network install > of some RPM, then the punters can actually *use* the disks provided > without it rushing off so some server that is > no longer available. > Installing linux is a very time consuming job, and the brilliance of a > decent installer, like SuSE, is the sheer amount of > work that has gone into it. Including a few features that may be present in apt-get but if so I've never heard them mentioned. Also I'm not sure (not having a sub) but it's possible that the driver RPMS that we wanted are most likely avaliable to Mandrake club members. Did any one check? As I'm sure a couple of people in the list have subs. > I talked myself raw with one guy (Allan) who asked me heaps of decent > and pointed questions.
