Easiest types of modems to connect are external serial modems, no
drivers needed, and you get bonus blinkenlights. So they're your "best bet".

However if you want to use the internal modem, first off download the
latest slmodem drivers...
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/slmodem-2.9.9.tar.gz

Now follow the instructions, you'll have to compile, insert modules, and
maybe even run a script to create /dev devices. Without the /dev device
the process of installing the "drivers" is incomplete - when kppp goes
to use your modem it "opens" /dev/ttySL0 to talk to your modem.

I've never touched Mandrake so I'm not sure if you'll need to add users
to dialout or ppp groups before they can use kppp - someone else on this
list should be able to though, give it a go running as root maybe?
Someone else on this list might hint at other mandrake options.
