The modem ran fine under kernel 2.4.22 and slmodem 2.7.10 (IIRC).
Upgraded to Mandrake 10 with kernel 2.6.3, and failed to connect to Clear with slmodem-2.9.9. We were able to connect to a different Clear modem (the VPN one), and to snap.co.nz (?). Also, my sound vanished (known issue with Trident drivers and 2.6.3 - I need 2.6.5 or later, I believe).
I have a number of options:
1. Revert to 2.4.22 kernel
2. Upgrade to 2.6.5 or later, and use the ALSA modem option provided by Smart Link.
3. Change ISP
I intend to do both the first and the second. I want to get my install up and going again, so I will revert to 2.4.22. Having done that I can experiment with 2.6.5 at my leisure.
Maybe by the time I get around to all this, Smart Link will have sorted it out!

I have assisted someone who has the same modem on a mandrake 10 box.
When I say assisted I mean I attempted to get the beast running, but failed to get it to run reliably.
The 'make install' process failed to create a soft link between the character device and /dev/modem.
The modem failed to establish a reliable connection the computer owners isp, but connected to my isp with no problems.
The best way to use kppp's query modem feature, is by trial and error create soft links to /dev/modem from the following;
%dev (c, 212, 0) /dev/slamr0 %dev (c, 212, 1) /dev/slamr1 %dev (c, 212, 2) /dev/slamr2 %dev (c, 212, 3) /dev/slamr3
This above info has been copied from the ./slmodem-2.9.9/scripts/slmodem.spec file.
The more adjustments tweaks etc we attempted to get the modem to work the deeper we seemed to dig ourselves into the mire.
I have not heard further from the computer owner. I fear that he has given up on Linux as too difficult.
