Ross, the linmodem did go fine. before the hard drive died permanently
     I had come to the conclusion that ppp in this distribution of Mandrake
     is faulty. Testing with wvdial coninually put a corrupted login  into
     pap-secrets.

Uninstalling ppp and replacing with the package from m8.2 cured this problem but
I never got connected.

I have installed M8.2 on the new hard drive, downloaded driver source code for
the 2..4.18 kernel and compiled it and the modem just went. no probs.
