i have been experimenting with "ripping" wav files from music tapes, with a
view to recording them asCD music files

I have used gramofile to rip and filter the tracks and then wav2cdr to
convert them to CDR files, k3b to record them

The output from wav2cdr in the sample below gave a file "span1.01".

K3b can't recognise this file type, I've tried expermenting by renaming the
extension as "cdr" "wav" "raw" but no luck with getting the CDR playback

k3b (actually cdrecord, which it uses) will automatically reformat a .wav file when writing it to cd. I do something similar, but skip to...
cdrecord dev=0,0,0 speed=16 -audio -pad -v *.wav

Who was it that wanted some vinyl ripped?

Cheers, Rex
