I have found that Ubuntu has by far the least painful install.
Note that it asks to download updates.
When I said 'yes' to that it fetched some 170Mb of files.
It defaults to Gnome, and since it is a Debian offshoot it has apt-get which 
enables you to install anything you need.

In a word: It's slick.

otoh if you are into fiddling around with your machine, Gentoo has a following 
on this list.
