What do you base that statement on? Other than very recently when there have been some "technical" problems, I've found the latency to be more than adequate for the uses you mention. It's not as good as cable in that respect, but it's still not as bad as you suggest.
Sorry. I was referring to Telecom's UBS that ISPs are reselling. I was assuming that Maxnet's UBS offering has similar tech. specs to the UBS offerings of other ISPs.
The page http://www.maxnet.co.nz/content/2/225/0.htm has the quotes:
"UBS will NOT support: Video over IP, Video Conferencing, Low latency / real time applications."
"Mean Packet Transfer Delay (one way for 1500 Byte packet) < 1 second"
