And then login. Once you are at a command line interpreter prompt - the $ sign, say 'startx' ( no quotes ) and tell us what happens. If you get a momentary glimpse of the X server which then dies, could you post the file /var/log/XFree86.0.log or if it's not there try /var/log/Xorg.0.log if neither are present, then let us know that too. btw, if you are trying to load a genuine RedHat, I hope you know that it's not exactly a recent release. It's my opinion that the Ubuntu distribution is by far the least problematic to get and keep going; particularly so on older machinery. There are several CDs floating about in the CLUG. ps.
