Thanks to Steve, Chris and David,

The PATH=$PATH ....command worked OK. Enabled me to re-edit the /etc/profile file, then after a reboot all was OK. One extra set of  " in the string caused the problem. It's a problem when you have fingers like a bunch of bananas :-)

As far as I can see, everything is in place but when I do startx I get the following:

xinit: too many symbolic links encountered (errno 40)
xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2)
No server "X" in PATH
Use the -- option or make sure that /usr/X11R6/bin is in your path and that "X" is a program or link to the right type of server.

Then a possible list of servers is displayed and I have XF86_VGA16 in place which is in the list. The directory containing it (/usr/X11R6) is in PATH.

-X11 TransSocket UNIXConnect can't connect - giving up
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

Does a direct reference to XF86_VGA16 have to exist in PATH ?

Cheers - Woodsey
