I have been running a GF2 MX440 64MB for years and have had a FX5600 
256MB sitting on the desk here for a few weeks.

Your post prompted me to throw it in and see if I had the same 
trouble. I literally just opened the box and swapped the cards.

Where does nvidia-configure come from? I don't have that on my system.

glxgears on my MX â 900fps
glxgears on my FX â 2400fps

both measured within the last 30 minutes with no other system config 
changes.

Sorry no, but I am happy to offer any help I can regarding my setup 
compared to yours etc.
