To begin with, it was a good deal because the software was enabled people to

Then, as complexity increased, the addictive Mysterious Magician Factor 
increased in unison, and the general public in business quickly found that 
the population had become de-skilled & they could not do without these toys. 
The purveyors of computers, like the other industry which refers to it's 
customers as 'users', were then able to charge more or less whatever they 
wanted.

Remember that in the US company directors are legally liable if they fail to 
produce the maximum return possible on shareholder funds.
