To start:

Does it beep when you insert the card?

No beep: pcmcia subsystem not started -> run /etc/init.d/pcmcia start
1 beep followed by a lower tone beep: card not supported -> I need logs to help 
you here
2 beeps: probably the interface is up but not binded to any IP address ->
                Temporary fix is to use ifconfig to assign a static ip address 
to ethX
                Better solution is to modify (distro dependent) 
/etc/pcmcia/network.opts
