Static IP address (10.1.1.5), beneath working email & web services
(but pop, browsing, updates, etc, were all out). Got it?
nor via DHCP (that's right, it looked like a
DNS failure).
now something really is confused!
Definitely DNS was down, as the two xtra-dns addresses were in place in
the client config. The dsl-modem "Status" light was blinking abnormal,
to say the least.

You'd have seen similar strangeness if that was your business.
