No it is not! You might learn the odd fact and anecdote that way, but what you learn off e-mail lists and IRC channels is actually pretty limited. By far the best way to learn virtually anything is to read the literature. By so doing you will also learn the language constructs and nomenclature that any particular branch of human activity uses. You will then be able to communicate with your peers in such a way so that there is no space for ambiguity. The resultant misunderstandings, which btw, sometimes cause your peers more than just a trice of aggravation, can thus be avoided. -- C. S.
