Sorry- I now see in a previous message that you tried it and it made no 
difference.

I was using a sort of WinModem in a ThinkPad 600E laptop- it is the IBM 
mwave modem.  I downloaded the drivers, not expecting it to work, but lo! 
and behold!  It did - only after I added the noauth option because the 
first few times I was logged out after connect, which upset me (so I 
sympathise).

Can we recap?

Your modem was working.  You reinstalled Linux.  Now, the modem itself 
appears to work, but the connection is dropped immediately or soon after it 
is made?
