Treo SmartPhone is quite popular for this sort of thing. I myself have progressed from a Palm PDA to 3"x5" index cards held together with a binder clip (the eponymous Hipster PDA). I have a 5 year old Nokia mobile. It doesn't have a camera, colour screen, MP3 player, FM radio or nose-hair clippers, but it does make and receive calls and SMS.
