ubuntu does not ship mp3 codecs for legal reasons. Its a PITA when so
many people use their computers for multimedia, but there you are, easy
fixed.

System menu, Administration, Synaptic

search for what you want. right click the package name you want to
install. choose "mark for installation" choose "apply" from the toolbar.
follow the dialogs until conclusion. Do not reboot (well you can but
unlike windows there is no need). Use.
