Hmmm. This is the part that I need to master too. All I can say is that
the Debian / FreeBSD & Gnome distros I use start up in a grotty little

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh so gnome affects the console resolution before X starts.
Interesting.
mental note to file a gnome bug about that.
No. A kernel compilation flag is implicated. Or maybe GRUB - that's what
first shows up window-framed-like - perhaps it's Lilo that works
framebuffer differently. And only on my laptop's video subsystem, that
I've seen.
I know the effect you are referring to, I was just puzzled that you
associated it with gnome.
Common to the 'feature' have been Gnome... Debian-base(exceptKnoppix)...
aha! ...Grub!! Thanks for prompting this to be thought through.
I am examining menu.lst - defoptions=vga=791 is mentioned there ...
YMMV.
Have you been on the plonk too?
Pardon?
It seemed a facetious comment, or one somehow disconnected from the
trail of clues. But unlike another's tonight, yours merits reply. Yet
not an echo of ubergeek animus.
