Neither of these is the latest of their brands, but either should work.
For fun just pop the Knoppix 3.8 one in the CD drive and re-boot your
machine, and have fun. You can explore without any fear of altering your
hard-drive in any way. Knoppix is what is known as a LiveCD.

We have a number of these.

That should be perfect for Linux.

Correct

Not quite. For WinXp the dist is partitioned as one partition.

Many, Dick Smith etc. Also list members have many different Linux CDs.
The normal arrangement is for you to provide a replacement disk.

For the initial update after installation you are correct, but for most
programs a dial-up will be fine. Remember that we all existed on 56k dial
up for many years, until the Telcos corrupted us with their idea
of 'Broadband'. Please be aware that WinModems can sometimes be a bit of a
trial to get going properly under Linux. Do you know what make and model
you have?

Yes. The programs inside are the same, it's the installation and update
methods that differ.

Just put "Linux newbie" into Google and see what comes up.
